Giving back whilst working full time - A blog by Scott Bamber

Date:

My name is Scott Bamber, Corporate Development Manager at People’s Partnership and I’ve been a Volunteer Adviser at The Pensions Ombudsman (TPO) for almost a year now.

I had been exploring ways in which I could give back to the pensions industry that I’ve worked in for over 35 years and positively contribute to pension scheme member outcomes. Joining the TPO volunteer adviser network, prompted by TPO Ambassador posts on LinkedIn, seemed a great way of meeting these goals.

Completing the registration process was straightforward and the training, mentoring and support from the volunteer team has been first class. The role is flexible and allows you to take on as few or as many cases as circumstances permit and to choose to accept different types of cases to broaden your own pensions knowledge.

Working full-time my availability is limited, but I’ve found I can check in and progress open cases several times a week, usually before or after work, and attend training and technical webinars during lunch hours.

I’d recommend volunteering with TPO to anyone in the industry looking to ‘give something back’ and sharpen technical skills. There’s a great deal of personal satisfaction in delivering positive outcomes for customers.
